You could have gotten them when you were little from simply sharing a drink with someone who had a coldsore at the time. Yes coldsores are a type of herpes but not the same type that gets recognition for being an STD. There is a lot of medication that can keep you from having a coldsore worsen when you feel it coming on. If you talk to your doctor they can prescribe you with some type of medication to help. Also you should know that some people think that cold sores can be spread during oral sex, this is a myth!!!! If you have a coldsore and you go down on a girl, you WILL NOT give her herpes!!! The olny way that you can spread them to another person is sharing a drink or passing spit(kissing) while you have a coldsore AND they have a cut or something. My boyfriend gets coldsores often and we still kiss and i still have not had a coldsore once in my life!!! Goodluck!

What Causes Cold Sores and How Can I Prevent a Cold Sore Event?

What causes cold sores for you? Three main triggers are responsible for causing cold sores that I would like to tell you about shortly.

First, what causes cold sores for all people is the herpes simplex virus, type 1 or 2. Do not worry about it. Nearly 89% of the world population carries this virus.

Normally it is dormant, but when the herpes virus becomes active, it will move to the surface and enter thousands of cells. It then forces your cells to build new virus copies.

Your infected cells will swell up with the new virus particles and finally burst open to release them. These destroyed cells create the painful open sore.

You cannot get rid of the virus once you get it, but you certainly can keep it from ever activating by knowing the trigger that causes cold sores for you.

Here are the three triggers you need to know about.

1. You Have an Acid PH.

Your pH balance is a measure of how acid or alkaline your tissues are. On the pH scale, 7 is neutral. Below 7 is acid and above 7 is alkaline.

When your pH is alkaline, (ideal is 7.4) it is nearly impossible for you to get sick from a virus.

Your body will usually range between 6.6 and 7.35 pH.

The more acid your tissues become, the lower your oxygen levels and the more at risk you are for a herpes virus attack.

Foods such as white flour, sugar and carbonated drinks can cause you to become acid. Eat more green vegetables with high amounts of calcium. In addition, vitamin stores often carry kits for raising your alkaline levels.

2. You Have Too Much Arginine.

Arginine is an amino acid (protein) that the herpes virus must have for creating new virus and a cold sore. An outbreak simply cannot occur without arginine.

If you are susceptible to these sores, take in additional arginine and you will almost surely get an outbreak.

Lysine is another amino acid that can really help you here.

You will find both arginine and lysine, in varying degrees, in most common meats and vegetables you eat. Your cells store both of these proteins in the same storage area within the cell. Room is limited, so the more of one, the less of the other.

By overloading your cells with lysine, your cells will replace the arginine with lysine in storage. This is how lysine is so effective in stopping and preventing these terrible lesions. It is a great cold sore treatment.

Real Wisconsin dairy products are particularly high in lysine and useful for raising your lysine levels. To get therapeutic levels of lysine, however, you really need to get some lysine supplements.

They are cheap and easy to find. Most people take about 2000 milligrams or so during an event, and a capsule or two every day for prevention.

3. Your Immune System is Down.

When your immune system is weak, your antibodies will not be as effective as they need be to protect you.

If you get frequent sores, or the ones you get are quite severe, your immune system needs a boost. The easy way to achieve this is to pay attention to getting high levels of important nutrients into your body through diet and supplements.

Start by increasing your intake of fresh, raw vegetables and fruits if possible. Food always provides the best-absorbed body ready vitamins and minerals.

Then, for optimal results, you should start taking a top-shelf vitamin and mineral supplement. Some people have avoided outbreaks by just doing this one thing.

Do not make the mistake of wasting your money on one or two per day drug store vitamins. You will not see any results if you do not use top shelf, high quality supplements.

Some of the most important nutrients you need are high amounts of vitamins A, C, E and the entire B family. In addition, minerals calcium and zinc are very important.

There you have it - the three main triggers that cause cold sores. There are other triggers you will want to know about, but these are very important to know right now.

Finding your particular trigger will tell you what causes cold sores in your life and will pave the way for you to claim freedom from these outbreaks.
