Cold Sores Contagious How Long
Cold Sores Contagious How Long
How long is my cold contagious to my newborn child?

My son is 2 1/2 weeks old. I started showing symptoms of a cold about three days ago with a sore throat and have been staying away from my son since then. I would be devastated if he caught this virus, especially being so young. Is it safe to hold him again once the symptoms subside? Or do I need to wait longer? My poor wife is left handling all the child-rearing duties until we both feel I am no longer contagious.

Don't stay away from your baby. The 'virus' that you have caught, your son would have been exposed to long before you even knew you had caught it. The 'virus' was already in your system long before you noticed any symptoms.
Just breathing the same air as you would expose him.

If your wife is breast feeding, the antibodies she is giving him will help him fight the virus.
If she's not breast feeding (and giving formula) he will still get the exposure from when he was around you (and when she was around you, I'm sure she was exposed to the virus as well.)
Sometimes a virus can take up to a week (of being in your system) before you see any symptoms at all.

Go give that baby a hug! Don't 'stay away' from him! He needs his Daddy! (whether you're sick or not :)
