Cold Sores On Mouth

Can you get cold sores anywhere else but your mouth area?

I've got a cold sore, barely noticeable on my lips. Can I still kiss my girlfriend on the cheeks, or on her neck?

herpes simplex virus - I, HSV-I (which is the cause of the vast majority of "cold sores") can infect areas other than the mouth (neck, chest). It usually doesn't, as it prefers the mouth area, but I have seen HSV-1 outbreaks on other parts of the body.

HSV-1 is also able to cause infection in the genital area (genital herpes). If your partner already has HSV-1 or cold sores or has ever had them in her lifetime, then she already has antibodies to the virus and won't likely be reinfected.
Rule of thumb if your partner doesn't have/has never had cold sores: avoid intimate activities when you are having an outbreak (from the time you feel it starting until your skin is completely healed over).
