Cold Sore Outbreak Prevention
What vitamins should I be taking to help in the prevention of cold sores?
I have had about 5 out breaks this year alone and it is doing my head in!! I am fit, healthy, do not have a stressful job (only the pressure I put on myself but it does not come from above ie. management) I eat right (fruit and veg everyday) exercise everyday, I get enough sleep....
I am at my wits end! During outbreaks I dose up on Lysine tablets and I take multivitamins everyday. Is there something else that I should be taking that I do not know about?
During outbreaks I smother it in Zovirak and use Carmex lip balm. I am always careful to wash my hands so as to not re-infect (i've had this virus for like 15 yrs....I know what to do and not do when i have one)
Thanking you in advance.
My husband has had a cold sore that comes and goes for about 50 years. The first advice he got was to scrub the sore until it bled, but apart from being extra painful it did not help. Then he went to a skin specialist who gave him a prescription for some tablets - niacin and they worked but caused prickly hot flushes. When I met him he showed me the prescription and I knew it was vitamin B3 and to avoid the flushes it is better to take Nicotinamide which is the artificial form of that vitamin.
Now he takes one a day and sometimes an extra if he feels that tingling that warns of one starting. If the tingling persists he uses white spirit from the chemist to dab on often and the cold sore never develops fully. Good luck, I hope it works for you too. Vitamin B is water based and should not be harmful. - Pathel
