Over The Counter Cold Sore Treatment

over counter or herbal cold sore treatments--help?
I used a lysine compress and it discolored my skin on the area (around my lip) for about2 years after, I tried the commercial treatments like Abreva and Blistex but they did nothing at all.
I'm looking for a treatment I can take internally or apply to the sore itself without a prescription as I do not have medical insurance. Herbal or unconventional suggestions are fine as long as they are effective!
Thanks.
Hi Jello...well that's the thing ...I've been researching a lot but what I'm looking for is actual people with real life experiences, and not a manufacturing company's claims. Claims by any company will usually be skewed :-/
I am going to look into your suggestions though
Wow -- I even HAVE Vegemite in the fridge! It's so very salty -- is it the salt content or the Lysine content that's the factor? I will try this.
Thank you, Dr. Gilmore, for your valued advice.
Cold sores are caused by the Herpes Simplex 1 virus. The only over the counter treatment that has any proof of working is Abreva. Getting an Urgent Care Nurse-Practitioner to give you a script for Zovirax is the cheapest cure for a cold sore, because Zovirax (acyclovir) is the first treatment developed for Herpes viruses; also works for shingles (Herpes varicella zoster-chicken pox virus, and HSV-2, the genital herpes virus). Other remedies, and treatments aren't effective in treating the virus, only some will offer symptom control, such as the colloidal silver topical. See the Urgent Med Nurse, very cheap, and the med Zovirax is generic, and also very cheap (around 12 dollars for a weeks treatment at Walgreen's or Wal-Mart)
Good luck
