I get large cold sores on my nose several times a year. Usually I don't sense the "tingle" soon enough to take acyclovir (anti-viral) that the doctor prescribed. I tried taking Lysine long term and that didn't help either. I use probiotics and take the finest nutritional supplements. I've also tried zinc, Tetrasil ointment, colloidal silver, etc. Recently, I have been using nail polish remover alternating with rubbing alcohol to dry them up (recommended on a popular cold sore website), and that seems to help more than anything.
