Ok what won't work, changing your diet, taking vitamins or using quack remedies. No cure, it is not possible to eradicate the virus. If the infection is more than 72 hours old, anti-viral therapies will not work for this episode, and only supportive measures can be used. If your problem is recurrent, but fairly localised and infrequent then topical acyclovir is as good as anything. If the area of each outbreak is extensive or the episodes are frequent, a general check for underlying causes should include a full blood count, sugar check and immunoglobulin screen. Sometimes a course of oral antivirals will both help and acute episode and extend the time periods between attacks. Sometimes GPs are resistant to doing this as it is a bit expensive.
