Cold Sores Canker Sores
Canker sores and cold sores the same thing?
i have canker sores every now and then but i didn't know if there considered the same thing.
Canker sores are small sores that happen inside the mouth. You can get them on the tongue and on the inside of your cheeks and lips. They usually pop up alone, but sometimes they show up in small clusters.
Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex 1 virus. They usually appear on the lips. They are highly contagious but not dangerous. They are not the same as herpes simplex 2, which is the virus that causes the STD.
Canker Sores
These sores are usually found in the mouth. It could be on the roof of the mouth, beneath the tongue(on the soft palate), inside the chick, on the inside of the lips or beneath the gum.
Canker sores are usually very painful and will go away between 7-10 days.
There is no known cure for these sores, neither is there a known cause for them. Unlike the cold sores, these are not contagious and you need not worry if a member of your family or a close friend has them.
Canker sores usually present themselves as a whitish lession with a red border, a small bump or red spot which produces a slight burning/tingling sensation.
What causes canker sores? The following are some of the causes;
1. Braces could break the mucous membrane causing an infection
2. Weak immune system
3. Allergic response
4. Inflammatory bowel diseases
5. Certain food stuff eg. chocolate,coffee, strawberries, nuts, cheese etc.
6. Hormonal shifts during menstruation periods
7. Highly acidic foods such as pineapples
8. Emotional stress
9. HIV AIDS suppresses the immune system
There are two types of canker sores, minor sores and major sores. When you have minor sores, you will notice an oval lesion in your mouth, under your tongue or inside the chick which should clear between 1-2 weeks leaving no scar. Major sores however present themselves as large lesions and can last for a month or even years. They heal leaving an
extensive scar.
What are the symptoms of canker sores?
These include fever, listlessness, swollen glands.
It is best therefore that you make sure that your immune system is at its peak to avoid this infection and other opportunistic infection.
