Chances of getting genital herpes from a cold sore?

Yes, I reposted this. I want to know the chances that he DIDN'T get genital herpes.

I got a cold sore, and that same day I froze it with ice, and bought Abreva and applied it religiously throughout the day. The next day, I popped it and drained the fever, put peroxide on it, washed it in the shower, froze it again, and reapplied Abreva throughout the day again.

That night, I gave oral sex to my boyfriend. No condom was used. It wasn't for more than 10 minutes. Given the 2-3 day time period of treatment applied to the cold sore, and the fact that it was slightly scabbed up, what are the chances he could have genital herpes?

He's getting checked next week. I just want to know the statistics. How often does one actually get genital herpes from a cold sore? If he has children, will they have it?

If I gave him oral with a cold sore, will he get genital herpes or the oral hsv-1 virus, meaning he will start getting cold sores?

There are several different strains of the herpes virus. The two most common are

Herpes Type 1 (HSV 1) which causes cold sores
Herpes Type 2 (HSV 2) which causes genital herpes

HSV 1 is very much at home living "above the belt", usually around the mouth. HSV 2 is at home living "below the belt", usually on or around the genitals.

For this reason, it is less likely to transmit HSV 1 to the genitals (or vice versa), but it is possible, especially if your cold sore is oozing and leaking fluid. Since you were scabbed over (and using Abreva), I seriously doubt he'll get the virus.

Also, about 95% of the population carries the virus for HSV 1, so his body probably already has antibodies to the virus, making him immune to a new infection.

For complete information about herpes, the various strains, and transmission, I've placed a web link below.

I'm sure he'll be fine... stop worrying.
