At what point is a cold sore no longer contagious? Is it once it's started to scab over or not until it's completely healed over?
Thanks.

The herpes virus can actually be transmitted at any time, whether there is an outbreak present or not. However, the chances of this occurring are infinitely smaller than if the cold sore is actually in the open, weeping stage - the most contagious stage of its existence.

The absolute safest way to be is to refrain from any physical contact (yourself and others) with the affected area from the "tingle stage" to the time the cold sore scab has fallen off. To apply medication, simply use a cotton swab or cotton ball, and a fresh one each time it touches the area. For more tips on cold sore application tips go here:

For a very useful guide on healing cold sores quickly and prevention techniques, I have found this page on the same site to be very useful:

Remember, sharing drinks or utensils, kissing, and any other kinds of physical contact can spread the virus.

Hope this helps!
