Cold Sore Salt Water

Does gargling with Listerine or salt water help prevent a cold?
I can feel a cold/flu coming on. My sinuses feel stuffy, and my throat's sore. Since it's only started, I thought maybe I could do something to prevent it from becoming a long illness. I heard gargling with Listerine or salt water can help kill off a cold, is that true?
/Gargling with salt water can help if you have tonsilitis and maybe have pus on your tonsils, etc. It doesn't do anything to ward of a cold in progress. It just has to run its course. Listerine will only help to rid your mouth of new germs. The existing ones that are in your body are there and no amount of Listerine will reach them. Sorry. Hope you feel better soon.
