Can Aromatherapy Have an Impact on Your Health?

Certain forms of aromatherapy have been around for thousands of years. For instance, the Egyptians used essential oils for numerous medicinal purposes. However, the actual term aromatherapy was not coined until the 1930’s by a French chemist. Throughout the years, a wide range of oils have been used to treat an array of aches and pains. For example, lavender oil was used to treat soldiers in World War 2. These essential oils can be applied directly on the skin or they can be absorbed through the sense of smell.

When we smell aromatherapy oils our bodies undergo a chemical reaction. In this chemical reaction our bodies release endorphins, serotonin, and encephalin which all contribute to a feeling of relaxation. However, it is important to remember that each essential oil is responsible for different results. For instance, chamomile is known for its calming effects as well as its ability to treat numerous aches and pains. Eucalyptus, on the other hand, is used as an antiseptic and as treatment against sore throat, common cold, and cough.

Lavender, one of the most popular fragrances, is used to treat insomnia, menstrual cramps, burn, insect bites, and nervousness. This particular plant is also used as an antiseptic and as an antidepressant. Peppermint is yet another favorite. This particular plant is used to treat bad breath, improve digestion, improve concentration, improve memory, and improve mood. Rosemary is used to treat headaches, arthritis, and the common cold. And last but not least, Sandalwood is very beneficial when it comes down to dry skin, acne, stress reduction and anxiety reduction. So if you ever thought that aromatherapy was just a hoax, think again! Each plant that is used in aromatherapy has its own essential health benefits. Simply find out what health concerns trouble you the most and attempt to relive your symptoms the natural way.
