Cold Sore Natural Prevention

Do you know of natural remedies or common practices that were once considered witchcraft in the 1600-1800's?
I am looking for now accepted alternative medicine practices in western culture to compare to folk medicine or healers herbs recipes to compare to common uses.
For example, echinacea for cold prevention now? salt water gargling for sore throat treatment? what was used way back when?
How to treat infected cuts? Then and now (naturally)
How to control fever etc?
Any links you can provide are greatly appreciated.
Awesome info-- keep it coming! I am gathering info on the European witch craze of the 1600-1800 and am interested in what healers would have used in that era.
I consider myself an herbologist. I've studies some history of it and have a nice little collection of herbal remedies and recipes. From what I can find out, everyone has always used herbs to heal since the beginning of time. It was modern medicine that changed things around the 1700-1800's. Natural remedies were used from what was native to the land that people lived on. When someone went from Vermont to New Orleans, the herbs used were different to cure the same illness. Sometimes the religious practices were used which of course, made it seem very, very different. When a person was accused of witchcraft, it basically had nothing to do with healing powers of that person or the herbs they used, since everyone used herbs and plants. For instance, a person was accused of witchcraft that might have been wealthy and a landowner and a more powerful politician might have wanted their property (sounds like greed, huh?). Or maybe a pretty woman declined the sexual advances of a business owner, so he made the claims that she was a succubus. Sometimes a midwife, the local healer and doctor of small villages, would be accused of killing infants when more likely they died of SIDS, or maybe it was a premature birth or maybe the baby was born with Down's Syndrome. People were uneducated and as such, were just a bit more superstitious. The more educated were just plain mean and greedy and sexual jerks. Then mass hysteria sets in.
