Cold Sore Contagious How Long
about cold sores...............?
Way back when i was in high school, i remember i had a sore on my lips that lasted for like 2 weeks or more(i cant remember exactly how long it lasted)& it was kinda painful. Now that im older,ive realized it was a cold sore(i discovered this just last dec08). Ive searched the net about it,they said i might have gotten it when i was a baby(probably someone who has a cold sore had kissed me,idk).
Ive also discovered it is caused by HIV1 . So now what? What will happen to me? Is it contagious? I have a bf & we're having sex,so what will happen to him? Will he be infected or anything?? =(
Cold sores are caused by HSV (Herpes simplex virus) - the saying used to be HSV1 "upstairs" (oral) and HSV2 "downstairs" (genital.) We now know that's not really accurate... you can have HSV2 orally and HSV1 genitally... and you can transmit the virus oral-oral, oral-genital, genital-oral, etc.
**Herpes virus should not be confused with HIV (Human immuno-deficiency virus) which is the virus that causes AIDS.**
While Herpes can be transmitted any time, even when there's no outbreak, it's really (really) uncommon to catch a cold sore from kissing someone who does NOT currently have a sore. Presumably, this also means it's unlikely to transmit via oral sex when you dont have an outbreak.
