Cold Sore Baby
My baby has a cold sore?
My 11 month old son has got a spot which looks like a cold sore in the corner of his mouth... Is there any way that I can treat this he has been very fractious for the past few days and I think it may be down to this. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
This could be one of many conditions.
I'm not so sure it is a coldsore as I think it could possibly be oral thrush as can be quite common in babies. I will ask you to answer a few questions, to yourself of course, and lets see if any of what your son is showing can fit into any of these suggestions;
COLDSORE
Has anyone who suffers with coldsores ever kissed your baby? Whether a visible coldsore was present or not. To get infected with the herpes simplex virus (coldsore) the person has to be exposed to it and usually that is by an adult kissing the child.
If the answer is yes, then it may be possible that is the cause. Take your son to the dr and seek advice there.
- As it is saturday today, how about taking him to a pharmacy and ask there. There is a topical cream - usually zovirax that can be applied to the lips which can work and help the healing process.
ORAL THRUSH - yeast infection
This could possibly be oral thrush. One of the symptoms to oral thrush is that the sides (corners) of the mouth cracks which makes it painful and hard to open the mouth.
Also, take a look inside his mouth. Does his tongue look 'different', is it white and furry looking, does it have red spots or yellow spots? any of these could be an indication of oral thrush. Even though, the cracked corners of the mouth could indicate it alone.

If this seems to 'fit', again take a trip to the pharmacy. They can give an over the counter med called daktarin. This is an orange flavoured oral gel. It doesnt taste too bad. All you do is apply this on the affected area a couple of times a day and hopefully it should kill the fungal bacteria which causes the oral thrush (see online pharmacy http://www.expresschemist.co.uk/product_2594_daktarin-oral-gel-15g.html )
This is good to use before a dr can prescribe nystatin - a oral thrush treatment.

IMPETIGO
I don't know much about this apart from it is VERY infectious. Has your baby been in contact with anyone who is infected with impetigo? if not I am not sure if he is likely to be infected with it? anyway, I looked it up on the nhs direct website and this is what I found;

Symptoms:
The symptoms of impetigo usually appear 4-10 days after youve been infected with the bacteria.
Small blisters develop first they tend to burst quickly leaving scabby areas of skin. These patches look like yellowy moist crusts stuck to the skin. Sometimes theres only one or two of these areas. The skin underneath tends to look red and inflamed.
Patches of impetigo are usually quite small. Sometimes other patches of impetigo develop near to the original patch and spread outwards. Impetigo is often itchy.
Impetigo is most common on the face and hands, but it can develop anywhere. In babies, the rash usually affects the nappy area.
Impetigo is particularly common in young children and babies, although anyone can get it.
CAUSES;
Impetigo is caused by staphylococcal or streptococcal bacteria.
mpetigo is spread through direct contact with infected skin (touching). It can also spread if you share towels or bedding with people who are infected, although this is less common.
Conditions where the skin is broken, such as eczema, nappy rash, or even just scratches or insect bites, can make it easier for the bacteria to enter the skin's layers and begin an infection

The Crying Baby Should not be Ignored
Normally, all of the babies have cried. When the babies are born, the first thing they do is crying. But if the baby does not cry, that is the bad sign for everybody. The first time of the baby takes the first air to the lung is the first crying, too. It means that the healthy baby should cry.
This is the basic environment in the family. But sometime, the crying can upset the family’s member, too.

4. Temperature: The baby wants the normal temperature (not too hot and cold). And the room with the good ventilation is the best.
5. The lonely baby: If the baby feels lonely, they will cry. So if you can not stay with him for all the time, the favorite doll is the good idea.
6. Insects: Such as the mosquito, the lice and the others can harmful your baby. You could protect them by every method as you can.
7. The light and the dark: If there is the strong light in the room, the baby will crying because of the irritation. But if they wake up in the darkness room at the night time, they will cry, too. So you should be set up the suitable light in the room.
8. Clothing: Tight dress will make the baby uncomfortable especially during the warm climate. And if there is a lot of sweat on the skin of baby, it will make the nappy rash in the hip region, too.
9. Nasal blocking and cold: The baby could not be able to sleep when there is a cold.
10. The habitual crying: Sometime, the baby will crying with out the real cause for a long time. You should be consulting the doctor for help.
11. Phlegm in throat: Atypical sound can be heard. The difficult breathing will result in cry.
12. Nappy Rash: The main cause is the using of the tight and wet nappy for a long time. It is the allergic reaction to the nappy. It cause soreness and itchy.
13. General aching: Sometime, Flu and prodomal stages of some infectious disease will result in cry.
14. Septicemia: The infection of the microorganism like bacteria, virus or fungus in the blood circulation. The common sign of the septicemia is the high fever.
